This morning I ran into a popular coffee chain to quickly grab a healthy snack... While looking through the greek yogurt & cottage cheese I noticed THIS in the pastry case:

Upon closer look you will find the PAINFULLY MISUNDERSTOOD TERM: -
REDUCED FAT - along with this stamp: - 500 CALORIES!?!?!
500 calories?! For real? Now, FULL DISCLOSURE - ANYONE who knows me knows, anything involving bread, pastries, or really DOUGH for that matter - is pretty much my own personal HEAVEN but A. I eat it in moderation and B. I know what is TRULY worth the most bang for my calorie buck. Lemme tell ya - this lame 500 calorie muffin, is NOT it...
THIS IS APPROX 500 CALORIES
24 Hard Boiled Egg Whites. (approx 17 calories each) OK - First of all, EW! But I'M TRYING TO MAKE A POINT HERE... I made it 24 (totaling approximately 408 calories) so you can go ahead and toast yourself a slice of Ezekial bread (Approx 80 calories.) Oh YOU'RE WELCOME!
You are now at approximately 488 calories STILL UNDER 500 calories AND you're pretty much full until next Wednesday...
OK - I mean, yes, also a bit excessive - but -
THIS IS APPROX 500 CALORIES
5 Apples (Approx 100 Calories Each)
Dunno why you'd do this... I mean you did just finish 24 full hard boiled egg whites so, ya know... but some people love themselves an apple I guess - so go crazy. Also, that's A LOT of fiber...Enjoy traffic.
PLEASE DON'T EAT THIS but - THIS IS APPROX 500 CALORIES:
1/2 cup sugar - (Approx 387 calories)
2 cup strawberries - (Approx 100 calories) - I couldn't let you just eat a 1/2 cup of sugar... (Totaling 487 Calories.) So you are now totally
CRACKED out on a 1/2 cup of sugar (and berries) PLUS you still have 13 calories to spare. What a lucky day.
AND FINALLY - THIS IS APPROX 500 CALORIES:
Well we finally got it together to make a nutritious breakfast, huh? 1C Oatmeal Prepared w. Water. (Approx 150 Calories)
1C of Blueberries (Approx 100 Calories) (for the record - that is a LOT of blueberries, you'll probably want 1/4 cup (20-25 calories))
1/4 C Chopped Walnuts (Approx 180 - 190 Calories)
TOTAL: Approx 430 - 440 Calories (if you had the 1/4 c of blueberries you probably had around 365 calories...)
UNDER 500 CALORIES!!!!
Let's sum up...
- A pound of fat is equivalent to 3500 calories.
- To eliminate ONE pound of FAT a week, one must eliminate 3500 calories from their diet a week.
- That is 500 calories A DAY for 7 days.
- You may do that via diet/exercise/a little of both - but remember it comes down to calories in and calories out. (You just effed it all up today w that dumb ass muffin and it's not even 8:30AM! - you get it now?)
Should you be a healthy adult, who has ALREADY CONSULTED YOUR DOCTOR on any particular health/nutritional limitations - you can determine how many calories you need A DAY to MAINTAIN your current weight by checking out THIS calorie calculator: CALORIE CALCULATOR. Subtract 500 from that number and THAT is how many calories you will need a day to lose a pound of FAT - SAFELY.
I promise you, one can find a healthy option ANYWHERE. I am on the road all day - if I can, YOU CAN... Just because it says REDUCED FAT doesn't mean it's good for you.
